Post subject:  PVC Pipe Greenhouse Query

Hi All

As a complete newbie planning my first system I would appreciate some input regarding Greenhouses/Shadehouses as I would to cover my system if I ever get that far.

I have reviewed MDB & Newfarmers info re their greenhouses which look great but unfortunately a hoop design is not practical for my site due to its shape.

I will need to go broadly triangular to maximise available space and am disigning accordingly. All the info I have found on the internet so far indicates the use of 25mm PVC pipe as opposed to the 40mm I have seen used with the hoop design on this forum.

25mm is obviously a fair bit cheaper than 40mm so depending on the quantities required could provide me with some budget savings which the Chairman of the Board has indicated I seriously need.

So this brings me to my query. Has anyone had any experience with 25mm PVC pipe in constructing more traditionally shaped greenhouses and if so can you give any indication of the spans used to ensure a sturdy structure.

I'm looking at something in the order of 5 metres long by 4.5m at one end and 2.5m at the other with an angled side on one side, square on the other if that makes sense.

If anyone has any plans or knows of sites with plans advice would be appreciated as other than hoop design I have only been able to locate two plans for rectangular greenhouses so far and didn't really want to spend the time re-inventing the wheel.

Thanks
Kevin

I don't see that PVC really will give you much support if your are not doing hoops. PVC works well for hoops since it can make an arch. IF you are planning to make flat plains, I fear that small pvc won't have enough strenght to be of much help.
Also, if planning on using greenhouse film or plastic, the hoop or arched roof works best as it won't collect rain and collapse or tear the structure.
What is it you are wanting to use the PVC for if not hoops?

For an irregular shaped greenhouse, I suspect that using wood might give more structural strength.

why not just use progressively smaller loops of PVC pipe.
Cheers

this seems interesting, but there are too many words for me... can you sketch your design?

Hi All

Thanks for the responses. Sounds like I could have made it a bit simpler so will take TCLynx advice and start a new thread in member systems with a picture of my concept plan seeking comments/advice. That way it will all be in context and I'll avoid getting ahead of myself.

Now however it's time for a nanny nap so will catch you all later.

Kevin
