Post subject:  Filter design, I need input

Ok, so while I wait for my bacteria to grow, I was designing an NFT setup and drew a filter design which at the time made sense to me and now I want your input on it. If anyone has tried it before please tell me why it works or doesn't work. If not, what do you guys think, would it work or would you foresee any problems with it?

I have the full design on corel draw, this is only a paint drawing showing the filter idea.

If you are pumping dirty fish water into the top of an open ended filter, it will overflow out that same end before too long. At least that is my experience with trying to filter in such a way. Fish poo is wicked good at clogging filters.

Now if you seal the end where the pump water enters the filter and plumb the outlet from the pump into that end (provided your pump and push enough pressure to force the water through the filter) it should work at least to an extent.

Other versions of filters kinda like this are to run the pipe from the pump to the bottom of a container filled with gravel or filter media. The have an overflow near the top where the filtered water flows out to where ever. I have done something kinda like this and it did work but you need to size such a filter appropriately to the load you will be putting on it or it will get too clogged to work eventually.

Also, such a filter is going to use up lots of dissolved oxygen so additional aeration for the water in the NFT pipe will be needed.

From your drawing it appears as though you intend to pump on a timer basis... and "flood & drain"...

Not exactly an implementation of "nft" as such... and unless the pipe(s) are filled with media... I think you'll dry your roots out...

Conversly... media in pipes running ala "nft" ... i.e continouos pumping/flow has some problems...

I also think that your "u" tube filter will probably clog over time.... how would you clean it??

Clogging was my main concern with the design, its what I thought would be the problem. I thought about uniting the U part to the channels with a T fitting and 100%silicon for easy removal for cleaning.

But, taking the advice and some tweaking done, how is this one? The hose from the pump would almost reach the bottom(leaving a few inches for poo to settle without clogging) and the bottom(end cap) would be removable for easy cleaning and reloading from the top again.

Would this do any better?

And thank you for telling me about flood and drain in NFT drying the roots. I guess I can lower the standpipe and let it run continuously.

This set up might work fine for a very small fish load. I think it might be appropriate for say an aquarium that is not heavily stocked.

Like add an air stone down in the bottom of the filter with the pipe from the pump and you could get lettuce fed from the fish tank.

If you want more than just a few aquarium fish, you will probably need more than a constantly flooded section of pipe filled with gravel as your filter.

For the AP systems most of us are running, a good amount of gravel to support a fish tank is at least as much gravel volume as you have fish tank. So if you have 200 liters of fish tank, you want 200 liters of gravel as your filter. Now there are other types of filter media that can do the same job in less space but they tend to cost more and will need more aeration in a set up such as you have there.
