I am in learning/planning stage. I have a space about 7m x 12m to put my system. My first decision, one big tank or several small tanks? It would seem that with several smaller tanks (say four at 1,000 l) I could stagger fish harvests and try several varieties of fish.

Opinions?

Looks like your second post and you have got it right at least 2 tanks to stagger fish harvest [cos if you only have 1 tank you harvest your fish and then have to wate for the littlies to catch up

As above.

Its even better to run them as two seperate systems.

jerrygar, Think big ,, say 3 x 2,000 tanks set up for "warmth" over winter in one system. 1X 2000 set up buried /inground for COLD fish like trout ,, as sumnmer approaches Trout eaten and cold water tank now warm enough for beginning silvers,,, meanwhile collecting from 3 species in your warmed OUT of the ground tanks.

Smaller tanks do give you more options. 1000ltr or above.

I think it it depends on what fish varieties you want to grow.

I went for a chift pist set up with a 5000litre fish tank with 1000litre sump.

This set up gives you two fish tanks anyway.

My idea was to have silvers as my basic fish in the large tank. The sump tank has my seasonal trout.

Some fish will co exist with each other so I may put a bottom feeder, murray catfish in with the silvers to expand my variety.

Too small a fish tank can change temp quickly causing problems for the fish.

A larger fish tank takes longer to respond to daily temp swings so has less effect on you system and fish.
