Thanks to the inquisitive children that visit us and our own starting to walk, I need to build a tank cover (one of Joel's tanks). Would like to have it half wood and half wire.

Is treated pine OK to use???

Considering the evaporation/condensation thing and the water dripping back into the tank and poisoning the fish. Any ideas????

The general consensus seems to be that you should avoid it... or at least seal/paint it... :dontknow:

Hi Lucky

+1 for not using treated timber.

Cool room panels make a good fish tank cover. They are Styrofoam sandwiched between powder coated sheeting. I have used several sheets that I got from junk yard. They are light, strong (I have pictures of me a my young bloke standing on a sheet in my thread) and provide good insulation in the winter.

You could possibly build something similar and cheap out of sheets of Styrofoam covered with a thin coat of fibreglass.

I know what I'll be looking for next weekend at the wreckers.

Thanks All

I've used fencing and netting or fencing and fabric to make covers over my fish tanks.

Cattle panels have wire that would be pretty strong, but maybe too far apart. Or build a strong screen out of untreated wood or water-resistant wood like cedar?

Yea, the spacing on the cattle panels is too far apart to keep a foot from falling down so I covered them with netting or fabric to help keep leaves and critters out.

Over one end of one of my tanks I have some of the wire shelving fastened down.

The equine panels would be another fencing option since the spacing on those is more like 2" but they cost twice as much and are twice as heavy.
