I've used a 2 1/2 inch hole saw to put holes in 4 inch pvc pipe and I have been using yogurt cups with holes punched in them as my "net pots" This seems to be big enough to grow baby lettuce but probably limited for anything else.

How high will you have your water level? The bottom of the net pot will have to reach down to the water level. "Traditional" NFT has just a thin layer of water, so if you ran it like this you will need net pots that are at least 6inches deep. The hole saw should be a little bigger than the diameter of the pots. 6 inch pvc is pretty big for NFT.

The net pots don't need to reach the bottom of the trough. Mine don't. Only issue is how to get moisture to the seed/seedling until it's roots reach the nutrient. I've managed this using rayon mop strings as wicks up into the "net pots" to set the seeds on so they will germinate and allow the little seedling to get moisture and nutrients until it's roots reach the nutrient.

6" is a bit far for wicks to work though so you might need to have a bit more than the thin film in the bottom of the pipe.
