Something I am yet to come across in this forum is info on how to add new fish to an existing system. There is probably a thread somewhere but my searches have failed to unearth it.

So, assuming you have one tank and have grown out your fish to edible size, how do you restock as you slowly remove the fish for eating? I assume you can't just add fingerlings to the tank with the big fish in there as they would get eaten. So what do people do - segregate the tank? Add another tank?

Having another tank would be ideal, although you can get away with just having one tank. With one tank it would be best to have a none cannibalistic species so you could add fingerlings with larger fish. Silver perch would be a good example of this.

Another point to add would be that having smaller fish with larger fish would present the problem of the larger fish out competing the little fish for food.

+1 for the use of silvers.

Staggering production could work as well i.e. make sure all of your silvers are at least half grown by the end of summer and then put some trout in to grow over winter. Any smaller silvers might get eaten but they were probably runts and would take 2 years to get to eating size anyway. Better off that they become trout muscle and poo.

Floating cages can be used to give the fingerling's more time. And some people harvest and freeze in one go.

Use your sump as a fingerling tank... while you harvest the others... :wink:
