I'm new so go easy on me. I have been lurking here for a couple of days and had a look at other peoples system and done some searches and have my system basically worked out. In my head anyway.
I'm not sure weather to go the Loop Auto siphon or the Bell Auto siphon yet but will make up my mind in the next couple of days, I will read some more.
I plan to use a 500lt Ft with a flood and drain GBs direct into the Ft. The GB will be between 600- 840 lts. I already have a 3000lh pump (brand new) sitting in the shed, so I'll start with that.
The thing that bugs me is that there will be huge fluctuations in the water level in the Ft and I'm sure I'm missing something, maybe to do with the sump?
In theory the Ft could be either empty or over flowing.
What am I missing?

It won't quite get to be fully empty but I would say there will be huge changes in level.

with a 600-840 litre GB there will be a fair bit of room taken up by the growing medium so you will probably be pumping at least a couple of hundred litres of water to it.

I would suggest using a sump and setting it up as a CHIFT PIST system.

The gravel Hizmo, The gravel!!. Of corse, how stupid am I. Thanks for that, I think the chift pist system is backwards to the way I wanted to go and thats where the venturi drain comes in. Its all making some sense now.

i think someone deleted all there posts onceaponatime and a few people cryed about it , so we all have to suffer now, its totaly rediculus, like theres not enough info on here already. imo.

LOL, not as ridiculous as a 10 page thread with every third post removed.....................

You'd think a simple solution would be to proof read posts a little more. apparently not.

ridiculous would be to punish all for one persons crime is what i was getting at , and from the amount of "why cant i edit my posts comments" you would than assume a simple solition proof reading is not :wink:

BTW, i too have many posts with spelling errors, but I CAN edit, LOL.

Anyway, back to cockroaches questions, as the position on editing is not up for discussion, justification or otherwise :)

A cockroach in Brisneyland - how have you ever survived for so long :D

General rule of thumb is that the GB media takes up 60% of the space and the water 40% (rough workable figures), so your GBs will be holding between 240-340 litres when fully flooded...not much left for the fish.

Possible solutions are:
a) increase the size of your fish tank
b) decrease your GB volume
c) put in a sump tank and run CHIFT PIST
d) have small fish :D

Hi C’roach, can you divide your GB into two watertight GBs, each with its own siphon?
You’ll be able to use two pumps, one for each GB,
with second pump turning on after the first GB siphoned back into the FT.

Hey Himzo, I wasnt going to go the CHIFT PIST but since you mentioned it and I looked a little further I have change my thinking.
Its hard when you have an initial idea and imagine how it should work to then basically go in the complete opposite direction but the more I think about it, it seems the way to go.

Is there a way to add extra air to the system when pumping from the sump to the FT?
