Post subject:  Water Based Varnish in Reconditioned IBC's?

Hi Everybody :flower:
We have found a supplier of used IBC's on NSW South Coast for $180 each that have apparently held "water based varnish" and were steam cleaned. Does anyone know if these will be safe to use for our system? :flower:

Hi FreshFoodForAll

I too have the IBC,s tanks I, am in the Sydney area .
I would not risk it I have seen a tank with varnish in it ,nasty ,plus you just don’t need to risk it ,I pick up tanks round Sydney $100 to $160 for clean ones worth a trip to Sydney for the Pease of mind.

Hi Freshfoodforall.... whereabouts on the South Coast are you?....

If you're close to Nowra... contact Manildra... they'll give you an IBC for free... you just have to pay $130 (price 12 months ago)... for the cattle feed/tonic inside....

Think it's molasses.....

Even water bassed paints/varnish can have some nasty solvents in em. If you really do intend on taking such a risk, Get your hands on the MSDS sheets for the varnish and use that to help you decide how much of it you want in a recirculating food system. Remembering that anything leaching from the plastic in a recirculating system can build up.
