Ok so I am going to be converting a Sand Filter to a Bio-Filter.. However I am wondering if I should just go ahead and use bio-balls. Anybody have any opinions on this? |

Why convert? If there is enough O2 in the water going through it, the sand should work for bio-filtration without the added cost of converting to bio balls. |

Or if you really want to remove the sand, just get plastic bottle tops - much cheaper. Or put in more growbeds |

bio-balls = $$$$$$ bottle caps, shotgun shell casings, other bits and pieces of plastic = cheap. |

The advantage of using recycled materials for media or cheap media is that if you get a outbreak of disease or parasite you can just chuck it out, rather than having to try sterilize the bio balls. I've heard of chopped up drinking straws used before too. Fil |

Slicer ,, I'm in the beginnings of doing the exact same thing. Shopping on ebay for a cheap sand filter. From what I've read bio-balls vary greatly in efficiency and THE BEST are known as KALDNES. Do a google and have a look. The only reason i want to build this , rather than just make more grow beds, is so the filter can be used at night in my heated system thus not loosing heat out to the gravel beds. |

I have probably posted this before but.... This Guy... http://www.ericnewman.com/biofiltr.htm (warning: crappy background music) Uses pvc ribbon which is made on a metal lathe, he just cuts pipe slowly to create the ribbon. 3 metres of 3/4 inch PVC pipe produces 1 cubic foot of bio material... So around $4-5 per cubic foot. Just another option to consider... |

They all work.. and all work on the same principle..... really just a matter of "appearance", availability and cost.... Google the koi sites.... they're loaded with DIY bio-filters (sorry main computer down, so can't post bookmarks).... and koi are a really dirty fish... The koi keepers have been doing it for years.... Here's a simple one using scotch pads.... (unsoaped!!)

Consider bio-bale too. It has a 800:1 ratio. The cheap generic version is called cello shred. The same thing as that plastic easter grass; only use the clear type. Its a type of plastic used for cheap food containers so its "food safe", but I do not know what or how much it may leach. |

I have a empty 380lbs sand filter that will be biofiltration.... I am planning on putting whatever in there be it bioballs or whatever. I can find enough to fill it for 60$ not bad! I am just wondering if its worth it. The 100lbs sand filter will be for filtration of solids. |
