Anyone thought about making your greenhouse bird proof and keeping small insect eating birds inside? I love new holland honeyeaters, and apparently they're legal to keep without a permit...but obviously not legal take from the wild http://www.parks.sa.gov.au/fauna_permit ... /index.htm they feed on insects and spiders, pollen and nectar and fruit |

i'd be worried about faecal contamination from birds on the veg, them being warm blooded and all............. |

How would they go with the high temps in a greenhouse during summer Steem, mine was reading over 40c on some days |

I had some pee-wees(I knew them as murray magpies in SA) in the GH once and they collapsed in the heat...revived okay when I got them out in the shade tho |

Good point. I've been thinking of an extension of shadecloth only with a door connecting the two areas. This would allow me to grow plants that don't like the heat and humidity (especially winter veg) |

Winter vegies still wont survive steem, a couple of 40 deg days = dead or gone to seed

I only have a greenhouse right now, so in the height of summer when the greenhouse is hot, some plants love it, others would do better in a shadehouse. My parents used to grow snake beans that only really got going when it was so hot that the normal green beans were wilting And zucchinis might be better off without the humidity... Also, a shadehouse should let you start winter stuff like peas and cabbages earlier than I'm game to right now because of the humidity in the GH. Kinda best of both worlds? Hah, don't think there'd be much meat on the birds Hamish Steve, you're missing out

Im not a huge fan of cauliflower - but I will share a great recipie with you. Take one couliflower and steam it untill tender. Put it in a blender with a 2 cloves of garlic (crushed) and half a tub of low fat philidelphia cheese (100g approx) and blend untill smooth. We call it notatoes - it is a low carb substitute for mashed potatow - very nice! |
