Because if you don't do it just right with the perfect ratio nothing grows. anyone could throw some stop lights above some plants or build a board but getting something to grow with them is another matter granted you could figure it out on your own eventually but you have to get it just right for "some plants". like lets say if you wanted to grow giant "tomato" plants in your closet and have a good yield this beats spending 4 years with a soldering iron? :/If you had a plant that wasn't very picky on it's light though it wouldn't take much to rig up a led for them. people have been growing lettuce for many years with these things. "$150?" 150 is for a pre-order all in all they are off their rockers if they think they are going to sell many of these at that price but they just came out and are back ordered for a bit. still though they finally got this working which is schweet! ;D *edit* all that to say having an indoor grow light that uses very very little power last for decades and puts off almost no heat is very very nice for everyone  to cold outside? led to hot outside? led live in a desert? led Small indoor gardens goes on and on once these lights come down in price a bit if you marry them with ap you solve world hunger in all climates :/ Bananas in the arctic Tomatos in the desert ect ect Power it all with wind, solar, geothermal whatever depending on climate and you win the game

They even tell you the exact wavelengths - 635nm & 450nm. mmm yah mebe it's not *shrug* just been watching people try to get this to work for years now and they always seem to fail horribly. corse never had the ratio and wavelengths and kits back in the day either /shrug Still though if you buy or even better diy this technology is the shiznit and it's finally working is what i'm happy about  been watching this stuff fail horridly for at least 4 years now and it's finally working ^_^*laments the weakness of his nerd-fu*

As for the wave lengths the LED'S aren't quite in the perfect nm yet but the plant makes use of the light that they do put out. As for the light being equal to a 400w HPS, there is alot to go into when comparing LED's with HID lighting, but lets just say that LED's do not have the intensity of HID lighting yet. So one would have to grow a plant short to make use of the light, as with HID lighting it can punch through better reaching the bottom leaves of a taller plant. LED's are the future, but the future is not hear yet.

yes intensity and penetration matter. if i'm correct then its the reason that you can have over 150W of T5 lighting on a marine aquarium and not get those nice ripple reflections on the bottom, yet you do with 150 MH |

Well I cant get to excited. It does look very impressive and my birthday is comming up so ...cough... feel free to take up a collection for me? Scratch that, my better half may very well kill me if I bring anything else into the house. I still havent had any luck with the LED's I purchased but will play around with the on/off cycle as its not a perfect set up by far. |

LED lighting reminds me of NFT... They both grow lettuce just fine and thats about it...  LED grow lights work fine if you have enough of them and you use the 1 to 3 watt leds modules instead of the standard 1/3 watt LEDS. You alsy have to change the light ratios for best growth so that rules out the "one LED light fits all" idea. The thing about LEDS is the spectrum is very specific and so is their usage.. It technical growing, not plug in and forget. |
