Post subject:  Microplastics?!

Hi guys,

Pretty much every system I see if using plastic, in some cases foam. There's a bit of concern surrounding microplastics in our water, food, and air. I'm wanting to not use plastic in my system. What are some alternatives?

I was thinking of carving my whole system out of wood. Obviously laborious and time consuming (and would be a small system). The channels and netcups can be wood. Wood is obviously not completely watertight because it's a bit porous. But I don't think it'd be an issue as far as aquaponics are concerned.

Any thoughts or ideas in this regards?

Thanks!

You can build the grow bed and tank out of wood if properly preserved and line with a pond line (either glue on or paint on) or fiberglass. Fiber glass is preferred because it increases tank rigidity and strength.

All your pipes and fittings though still should be plastic or ruber. Because copper and brass leached into the system will kill everything. Zinc plating is known to dissolve off in water not sure about how much copper is leached. But if water can dissolve a zinc plating then i am not chancing it with copper.

Thats why plastic is preferred. Its the most neutral and stable.

The world continues to make plastic things because they last a long time, and many do not have harmful contaminates. What better use for plastic than in a system intended to produce sustainable food for a long period of time. This increases food security and reduces our impact on the environment. It also reduces plastic waste by repurposing items that might otherwise be discarded.

All of my plastic IBC tanks and grow beds, barrels, etc. are recycled. So rather than going into a landfill or worse, they are producing fish and vegetables in my backyard. That's pretty awesome if you think about it.

Somehow a wood container with a plastic lining seem worse than a plastic container as far as waste goes. I suppose you can raise some invasive bamboo and make your pipes from that instead of PVC. Maybe build fish tanks from wood barrels or similar? But is that really sustainable to cut down trees so you feel better about not recycling plastic? Everyone has their own perspectives and comfort zones, so you will need to find yours.

Just besides the environmentalism I would like to see like a "gilligan's island" style AP system made out of bamboo pipes and grass skirted tanks and all that; that would be pretty awesome.

Would be pretty easy to make tanks and sump out of brick or concrete.
