Curious as to how you folks in hot climate keep your fluid cool. I've resorted to adding several cubes of ice while circulating through the towers in hopes of maintaining a somewhat tolerable temp. Don't think I'd do too well in full sun. Also, I seem to remember reading about how heating water will remove elements (metals) I think. This is referring to hot water from your house water heater. |

I put my tanks in the shade. They still get hot. Once the water gets into the 90s I position a fan to blow across the water. Owe and I use a hardy species. Blue gill. Just dont cook them and they will survive. When i move i am burying the tanks. That way the ground can cool and insulate the tanks. Sent from my SM-N970U using Tapatalk |

Hi ,I have put one of my tanks under a white cover to keep it cool which works quite well. We use this tipe of shelter for housing pigs and they do well. Also good for a kids play ground.

A good shade cover is the easiest and most cost effective way to keep the FT from heating up too much. Keep in mind as well that warm water doesn't hold as much oxygen for the fish as cooler water, so run airstone(s) appropriate to the size of your FT and fish population. |

I think I finally came up with a system that won't require an air pump. Time will tell. I've drown fish before. Thanks |

It’s the grow beds that are the main culprits. But yeah, like Rcm says, a hardy fish is a good solution. |

I monitor my tanks for a year with goldfish before I got food fish. I knew before hand what my water temps were going to be for my region. Lowest i hit is 45F in the winter and highest is 98F. Winters are short and summers are long. In Florida we have three season. Chilly, not so hot, and sweltering. It was actually a tip from this site that made me research Blue Gill. Your best fish species are what evers native. Then i learned about evaporative cooling from an aquarium site. When water evaporates from the top of your tank it cools the water. A simple box fan angled across the top of the water and shade cloth. Its easily 20F cooler in the shade and the evaporative cooling can net you anothers 5 to 10F. Last year it was 105F+ in the summer and my FT stayed around 90F. Fish were active and hungry. You can also insulate your tanks and grow beds with foam board. Mine arent insulated but my brow bed is made out of wood. You can even freeze some water bottles or milk jugs in a pinch for some peace of mind. I like having back up plans. In all honesty i worry more about the oxygen levels of the warm water than i am the temp killing them. My water heavily aerated in the summer because I am not so bright and stocked heavily. 45 blue gill dont looks big until a year later and they aren't quite big enough to harvest. When I had trout I kept several 1 gallon milk jugs filled with water in the freezer. I would use those on the hot days. But normally I just have catfish and tilapia so hot water is not an issue. |
