I’m looking to build a metal stand for 2x 100 gal media beds and I’m looking for what type of pipe I would need? Schedule 40 or 80 . This is for a high school Thank you |

Hi Chefflee, There are a few threads around that deal with metal stands... look at this post > viewtopic.php?f=8&t=29944 there are a heap of links in my post at #4. (links at bottom of list discuss galvanised circular pipe) also viewtopic.php?f=8&t=10024 Not sure on what your Schedule 40 or 80 translates to... (so non USA people may have an issue answering your query) But 2 x 100 Gallons = 2 x 400 litres (or so) => ~800 litres Water weight will be around 60% => ~500kg Media will depend on what you use, rock can be as high as 1.6-2kg/litre so you are looking at around 400-600 kg. Clay would be less around 140-200kg (assuming 12x 30 Litre bags) so you have a load weight of 700-1200 kg depending on media. I guess that is around 1500-2500 pounds. 40mm nb pipe would be minimum, 50mm nb better. With decent wall thickness. Guess based on https://www.engineeringtoolbox.com/ansi ... d_305.html (the pic looks about right) that is Sched.40 1.6" to 2" pipe (internal diameter). Of course more legs = less pipe spec's. Most shelving steel (warehouse racking) would also easily be fine. apologies about the metric numbers.... |

Schedule 40 would be what you need. 50mm = 2" PVC here in backwards land where we still use imperial My general recommendations are: 1" for pressurized lines coming from your pump, 2" for gravity draining lines. I don't think you'd need it for this size system but if you have several 2" lines combining into one have them go into 3" |
