I started my system in may 18.
It consists of a 1000l ibc with 35 tilapia (now 5 months old), a solid filter of 100l and a chemical filter of 120l.
they feed 2 dwb from cut up ibc.s, so 2 square metres and nft feed in pipes with plants.
I have done water changes, i have cleaned all the tanks, but the high ammonia/ammonium persists.
I think it is the BSA.
I have found stats for medium beds;
25 l of medium bed can filterthe nh3/nh4+ for a 0.5 fish,(as a rough guide),
but i havent been able to find stats for deep water beds. The chemical filet has various sized bottle tops in a pillow case, and an aquarium sponge to reduce evapiration.

To convert your ammonia into Nitrate you need enough surface area for bacteria to colonise , to use up that nitrate you need enough plants and the surface area to grow them on

You will need the equivalent of a 750 to 1000 Litres of wet gravel to handle your 35 fish , so a raft would need to be a significant size to provide that area for bacteria to live on to handle the fish ammonia.

What are your water tests

You might like to look at your feeding rate / plant ratio below is a link to an article on this subject , don't believe everything you read on the internet or see on youtube gather information and sift the value out of whats available

Things like stocking rates , growbed ratios , solids removal , constant flood v siphons ect ect are debated endlessly if you find something that works for you stick with it .

I'm not certain how much filtration the DWC beds give you but I know the information is out there. The plant roots in the DWC also provide locations for bacteria to attach so as the plants grow you'll have more and more filtration area.

thankyou for your replies.
the nh3 is 4-6 ppm, the no2 0.25, the nitrates 50 mg/litre(strip test)
water temp is 25-35ºc
no fish have died so far, the plants show no signs of mineral deficiency
