Post subject:  Drain for swirl filter
I just built this amazing 55 gallon swirl filter but I don't see how the drain is going be able to fully grab all the solids when I open the valve, creating huge anaerobic zones in my swirl filter, unless I drain the whole thing often. I thought about building this sort of thing to suck from more places when the drain is opened. These are just spare parts but it demonstrates the concept. Any thoughts or am I over-thinking this?

Not sure what your drain currently looks like. I have two different RFFs, and the drains never remove all the solids - not even close. The solids collect on everything. I use the drain to dump solids weekly. But every 4-6 weeks I use the drain to empty the solids, then collect the clear water for re-use. Once the filter is empty I hose it down and drain the remaining solids / dirty water. I put the clear water back into the system and restart everything.

So I too run small swirl filter. I did what you did at first but still saw my water as clouded with particulates.

You can see in this picture in the rear, the swirl filter. I have the water from the SF pour into a 3 inch pipe about 5 inches long. In that tube are layers if blue filter purchased at a pet shop. as the water pours in and out the larger debris is left in the filter. I run this filter 24x7, and see great water quality too.

I take those filters ans spray them clean in another 5 gal bucket. The dirty water is used for the dirt garden and the clean filters get reused.

Very pleased at how well this has worked for the system.
