Post subject:  Buying compost worms online ?

Looking to get a compost system up and running. I have seen a few places advertising sale of compost worms online. Would they survive the postage? How much should I expect to pay for worms?

I just kept an area moist and piled fallen leaves on the ground. After a month I had a heap of worms in the mulch. I transferred these to my work farm.

Worms can survive post so long as you are not talking about them sitting freezing in a warehouse over the weekend or cooking in a truck over the weekend.

The way mine were packaged was in a cardboard box (2 lb will fit in our priority mail flat rate box along with bedding) The box was lined with newspaper and then filled with almost dry bedding and then the worms in their moister bedding were put in the middle and covered over with more dry bedding and the newspaper folded over and box closed up. They can survive 3-5 days like that so long as the temps are mild but of course the quicker you get them the better.

Skygazer, one of our members, Worms, is a Worm Farmer. Maybe get in touch with him and he can help you out.

I ordered some from California and they survived the trip to Alaska in winter.

After a quick internet search for worm suppliers......

 far out they are expensive.

I think I'll go by the Bendigo worm farm today and see if he has any for sale. Last time I was there he said he sold them for $20/kg but he was sold out.
