Does anyone have a rough approximation of the growbed surface area needed to keep a family of 3/4 self sufficient in veggies assuming year round production? Or, for example, how many IBC growbeds it might take?

This question pops up now and then. Its very difficult to answer because so many factors come into play. Self sufficient is also a big ask from an AP system or any gardening for that matter as seasons, location and space dictate output.

There are numerous papers on what conventional garden area is required for the 'average' family of four, one for example is written by intensive gardening guru John Jeavons says to support 1 person for an entire year for fruit and veg is 4000 sq ft. or 370 sq m. Using this estimate you may need approx 1500 sq m for a family of four.

But, once again sooo many factors will change the scale and Im not even sure how to begin coming up with a reasonable answer. Even simplifying your question will take some guess work in providing something ball park..

Example..
Only veg
4 average people
Greenhouse/climate control for year round crops
Space is not an issue
AP can sustain closer growing densities
Vertical growing not included

I can only guess that approx 500-800 sq m.?

Hopefully there are some good number punchers out there or real life experiences that may come up with a better or more accurate answer sorry.

This is always a tough one to answer

Agreed Scotty, although I did hope other members would share their thoughts. Another paper I read recently was from a farmer who claims 5 acres is enough to create a sustainable living, this was everything including meat animals. I find that believable but it would be a full time job.
