Post subject:  Galvinized Stock Tanks?!

Curious if anybody has used galv stock tanks with out lining them. I've been checking and it seems that nobody is using them or if they are, they line the tanks with pond liner or cement/concrete....

If is good for horses and such, will it work for fish? Reason I'm asking, is I want to set up a couple of tanks for fry.... and the size/shape they come in is perfect.... :P

I do not know how good they would be. THey may be fine. I had a stocktank that after 5 years started leaching lots of 'gunk' into the water. There is always a film on it. I have seen people who put koi in galv tanks. It did not seem to hurt them.

I figured that if it was good enough for the cows we get milk/beef from, would it hurt the fish? Asking because my Local Tractor Supply has some on sale...... Dimensions and shape look good :)

You could always line them if you are worried...

We have a product over here known as aqualined gal plating. They put it on the inside surface of the gal sheet to make it fish safe. Your hardware guy will know of such a thing. Gal tanks for fish are great I reckon.

A lot of Aussie rural household tanks were made of gal sections lagged and bolted together inside a strengthening ring of gal angle iron with a poured concrete base - they eventually rusted out around the base, but I reckon every one of them lasted for 40 years or more under some really extreme conditions.
My next tank will be made of Aquaplate sheets with a treated concrete base and I will bet I get sick of fish before the tank wears out !
