Post subject:  algae questions

I searched and could not find. I have 2 questions about algae.

1. Why is it bad to have in your growbeds?

2. If you have it, how do you control it?

I lowered the water level in my GBs but I still have algae. I notice that there is still some water that can see sunlight. Lower the level some more?

Thanks folks.

if you have algae in your growbeds:
1. the algae is a plant that is taking nutrients that your veggies could be using

2. lower the water level a bit more (or add a bit more gravel ;) )

Other members have made noises that algae can cause pH fluctuations and suck up oxygen needed by the fish. So in general it sounds like it's not a good thing.

Algae likes light, so by keeping it in the dark it will die - it is recommended to have the water level at least 25mm (1") below the level of the gravel...so as Jamie says, add gravel or lower water level.

Algae in the fish tanks is more common and as it grows, causes fluctuations in pH and oxygen deficiencies - just reduce light to the water and it will die off (or try barley straw)

I've read barley straw only works in preventing algae to multiply. It won't do much to actually reduce algae, but it can keep clear water clear.

True Thomas.... but deprive the existing algae of the ability to feed and reproduce and your problem disappears in a week or two...

This is something that I have pondered.

My fish tank receives direct sunlight.

Should I stop that?

If the answer is yes, will 70% shade cloth be enough or should I be putting a lid on the tank to reduce it even more?

Shade cloth will probably do for summer, but given how cool/cold you can get in winter and/or overnight, it might be worth considering a lid.
