http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M_LmCDOXqTw sorry i dont know how to post the youtube video right in the forum post yet. here's a drawing of what the square siphon looks like. the square siphon is made by cutting up a juice bottle from starbucks. found in their cooler section. i have done tests using water bottles but they do not work as well because of the tight area of the lid. does not alow water flow.

Tis great that you got it to work V and I don't want to rain on your parade, but what you have is a fairly standard bell siphon. Gotta love a bell siphon - they are great :-) |

Yep, here is one using 40mm (1 1/2") pipe - good to see more ppl are doing work on them 
Using that small a diameter pipe on yours, there is no need for an air trap but you need to watch the inflow is not too great for the drain pipe If you want more info on the siphon http://www.backyardaquaponics.com/forum ... .php?t=685

i tried and tried and tried without the air hose but it wouldnt work or it would dribble for minutes before siphoning nomatter what the settings. but as soon as i added the air support it worked like a charm. also i tryed with round bottle containers and it wasnt working because they were small necked. but the square container had a wide mouth so i used it. |

so now that i got a raingutter working. what is the correct amount of fish for a 10 gallon tank.. and how big of a growbed should i actualy have? im thinking of cutting some rubbermaid tote's down to 12 inch deep. |

If you have 20gal worth of growbed and 10gal fishtank, then you can theoretically support 5lb of fish. This is based on the rule of thumb: 1lb fish : 2gal tank: 4 gal growbed. Start with only 1-2 goldfish and work your way up. Watch water quality as you go. 5lb fish sounds really high for such a small system, even though it is 'by the numbers'. |

Probably a maximum of 6Kg of fish per 100ltr (16Lb/28Gall..... you have approx 40ltr (10Gal) ... so probably no more than 2.5Kg (6.5Lb) of fish... and that's probably really pushing it.... Your tank size is so small that you really don't have much room for error. What sized fish are you thinking of starting with? Maybe a couple of large goldies at most.... |

i have 5 goldfish currently about 2.5 inches long each. the tank looks realy empty
