I've only just starting looking into aquaponics, and I have a bathtub that I'm thinking of using for the growbed. I've kept a lot of native fish and was wondering if the bioballs found in good filtration systems would make for an okay growth media ? |

They would be great for surface area, and hence biological filtration, but i would imagine that the roots would get very entangled, and hence when you pull the plants, alot of roots would remain. Also seeds would probably be flushed through, and you would need to use seedlings, or something to hold the seeds in place till they germinate. Im guessing that you have alot of bioballs already? Otherwise their is the cost of a bathtub full...I think it would work ok though |

I think Daniel has pretty much covered it. Maybe you could use a layer of bioballs at the bottom of the growbed--if you happen to have them lying around. On the plus side, they wouldn't decompose, and water will circulate freely around them. |

Thanks janet, that's exactly what I'm doing! |
