Hi Ben, It would probably be best to order fingerlings of Jades or Silvers, they should have been trained to eat pellets and be of a reasonable size to survive in a beginning system.

I am currently researching my options and plan to set up a system in the coming months. My understanding is that the temperature of the water is vital so it is important to have a large volume that heats slowly. This is not a problem for most of the time but during summer, the temperature north of Perth WA can reach 42 degrees centigrade for several days in a row. Is this going to be a problem? What is the best type of fish to start with? |

G'day Smil3y, You'll have very similar temperatures to a few members here including myself, as I'm in Perth. Probably your best option for fish species, if you want edible fish, would be silver perch. They will withstand the cool winters as well as the warmer summers without too many problems.. |

Yeah, SP are a good choice, have had a couple of 40ish days in Adelaide, and atm the water is at 28 and the silver perch seem happy (more active, etc) but i have added a precautionary aerator ideal temp is 24 though for sp (if i recall correctly), but in winter it stays around 21 ish |

I am in the process of setting up a system, hopefully up and running in a week or two. Probably going to stock some silver perch and some jade perch if i can find them. Problem is these species seem to spawn about October /November. Am i likely to be able to order fry by the time the system has cycled? Will have about 600L of fish tank (planning on around 50 fish) plus about 300L of tubs for yabbies. If I start eating them at 400g that should keep the density under 3 kg/100L. What is the minimum size other people have been eating them? |

Hey C1, can we mix the rainbows and SP in the same tank? Also do you have a supplier of rainbows? S3y - 42 degree days shouldn't harm your sp, many members in perth didn't seem to have a problem recently when we had a hot spell. I on the other hand did have a problem, but that was due to lack of oxygen in the water. |

I don't believe so as the temp for SPs best conditions the trout would be dead. so I'd say not! King river near Pemby! Nice drive about an hour from My place along brockman to stewart rd the northcliffe turnoff will save 1/2 hour down the dusty track and find a lake or 2 and a heap of ponds. |
