yes. AP i don't believe calcium nitrate was being suggested as something to cycle your system, more so something to feed your plants.

how many fish are you going to use in your system? i think you may be over thinking the problem.

Question EVERYTHING.

i don't care if you read it on this forum, another forum, from the guy on the corner or on the web in general ;)

I can not see how Ca nitrate is gonna cycle anything. at all. ever. much better use would be for home made fireworks, red i believe ;)

Fish wastes are ammonia. human liquid waste is primarily urea.

Urea is broken down both by urease (one again not sure on the spelling) and general decomposition to ammonia.

The decay of urea into carbon dioxide is catalyzed by urease:

(NH2)2CO + H2O → CO2 + 2NH3

If you use either urea or urine an ammonia test may show quite low levels then when tested again 24 - 48 hrs later it will be literally off the charts.

I believe this to be because the urea is being decomposed into ammonia.

Hope this helps AP

We always made our fireworks with sulpher saltpeter and charcoal

saltpeter is potassium nitrate (or sodium, i forget) ;)

the differnt colours come from using nitrate salts of different metals...........

AP, you want my advise with that stocking density?

fill you system with water (let it age if you need to)

go to VB's or Elk, bribe them with something and swap them 10kgs of fresh washed media for some of their system media. put it in yours and thats it.

Hell, you could probably even do with out. you're not going to get into trouble with that volume and those fish unless you over feed right from the start.

Don't get hung up on the cycling thing. simply monitor levels. seed system (as mentioned) if you can. job done :)

Yup, right on the money! Great chemistry lesson, guys.

I have no idea why calcium nitrate would cycle anything either. Trust Steve to know how to use it in an explosive. ;)

I used to be able to cycle up a new aquarium in no time at all by swapping in used filter media from another aquarium. I made sure all my over-the-back filters used the same size media insert. Seeding a new tank is great.

Yep - I agree. AP, Les or I can whack you up a seded biofilter to get you started. It will process the wastes while bacteria establish in your beds. I can easily spare 5 litres of hydroton already seeded to run in a seperate biofilter (which you can knock together in 5 minutes). Let me know.

Les and VB thanks for the offer of start up media, but I have that base covered.
