Sonshe...aquarium gravel is coated with glossy resin and the gravel does not retain bacteria, oxygen, nutirents.... pea gravel has rough unfinished surface that is better at providing surface for bacteria to grow.

Desktop Aquaponics is the manual you seek, however, no need since I've owned it for years and already did several classroom systems. The most simplistic setup is 10 gallon aquarium with foam raft and starter pots with pea gravel. 3-4 feeder goldfish, and air stone submerged.
