I don't believe we have 2 discussions TC the original poster (Johnathan) asked
Quote:
can it ever make sense from a monetary point of view too?
Or will growing your own stuff always be more of a labour of love?

which would indicate is it viable or profitable, so yes if the question was directly is AP a good investment my answer would be yes because of Duffs reason above, my system was bought with unused holiday pay which I could have blown on anything else (like a holiday  ) but then it would be gone, make sense from a monetary point of view? my point is, it isn't about money it's more about lifestyle and from a monetary point of view, to many it wouldn't make sense, more a labour of love

Nocky.. the small scale hydroponics operation was something I did many years ago... although I did setup a similar sized opeartion for a friend not so long ago....

And hope to again before summer....

20 tables represents about 8,000-10,000 plants... and a full time operation (7 days a week) for a single person (or two... depending how long a day you're prepared to put in).... planting, harvesting, selling, maintenance etc..

Is THIS a good investment?

I have no intention of buying it

But I might go and have a look this weekend and check it out just out of interest's sake

I know there's not a lot of info there, but what do you think?

Rupe, you might have some good feedback? :)

Taz ,, of course it's a good investment ,, the people are only selling it because the work is easy and they make so much money they don't know what to do with it all :)
Scarcasm yes ,, but always "buyer beware" it is not often that you find a true bargain

 Yeah I hear ya

I'll drop in tomorrow and ask the agent for a very long inspection.
Asking them 20+ questions while I'm at it. I love grilling realestate agents :P .

I dont think I spent something like a 120 hours working on my system. A lot of time was also spent in planning and driving back and forth to get what I needed. You could easily add another thousand dollars if I had to pay someone to do it. Still a very good investment.

The health benefits make the investment for me. It is so easy now to get a feed of fresh Veg where as before AP if I had the choice of driving down to the supermarket, find parking, waste 3/4 of an hour wandering around the store, always buying more than you need, which then always goes to waste, or getting something easy out of the pantry ( usually junk) then the easy option always won. Now It is easier to wander out the AP system with a bowl, fill it up with a choice selection of my favorite greens, add a little dressing and thats it. No mess, healthy , much better than a bowl of chips and a frozen meat pie, and the kids love it too. They inhale the salads we make and ask for seconds, ( I know we have checked their temperatures several times, Ive checked my own a few times too!!! I never used to like eating greens until I grew them myself)
Our friends come over with their bowl and take enough for a feed so the system is benefiting several families.
We haven't even gotten to the fish harvesting stage so that will be great when we we can take a fish and salad a couple of times a week.
The relaxation, ease of getting a fresh feed and the fact that it makes me eat healthy food is the ROI that makes it all worthwhile.

I agree. Any financial ROI is merely the minimal return.... and I have read of many cases now online with speciality plants that this has been very positively achieved. A good business all round. I believe it will be those who know how to grow food sustainably who will hold the real wealth of the future.
