Lost of people use shade cloth as filter material (provided it isn't treated with any anti mold stuff.)

Perhaps you could fill the filter tube with light weight media of whatever sort and when you need to clean out the gunk, dump it on a growbed, spray with hose and then re-fill?

I think My method for such a gunk vacuume would be more like a canister vac. Drop pump in with hose and have a 5 gallon bucket filled with gravel propped by the side of the tank so it can drain back into the tank through a few holes. If this bucket can be stored where it can get water regularly from the system, the gravel will have nice bio-slime to help catch more of the particles. Perhaps some lighter weight media would make such a thing easier to move around for the different remote tanks.
