tis not something you do every day either - this is to get a really accurate measure because your nitrates are high and you want to know exactly what they are.

Me - I've never bothered to try and get such an accurate reading.

C1 Some people's time is worth more than other's. But I do appreciate your concern.

its not really that much of an effort.

1.8l fresh water (you can have a container marked out)
200ml fish water (a texta mark on a powerade bottle works well)

dip you test tube.

i recon its about 2 minutes extra ;)

yeah, I was thinking distilled. But if your water is nitrate free, mine will be too.
Any reason to do 1.8:0.2?? I could do 0.4:0.1 right? (I don't have too many big measuring devices :-)

ratio is dictated by your expected pre-dilution reading.

if you think you might have 300+ppm NO3 then go the 10:1

if you think you might have 160ppm then go the 5:1

No I meant the quantity. I was going 4:1 (which is 20%, what you suggested)
But wondered if there was a reason to mix up as much as 2 litres...

KP, 200ml out of 2L is 10%

you could use 20ml and 180ml if you want and its still 10% but your error with in accuracies increases.......................

ok, KP feels VERY dumb at the moment... :-(
Such an oversight...

error I considered yes... Thanks for the tip Steve. I need to read some other threads and try to convince my self I'm not getting dumber as I get older... :-(

Scratch that I'm off to bed.

:hanging head in shame:

Kp, is there a reason to be so worried about differences between the test kits? I am only worried about the overall readings. Ammonia up, nitrates up, ammonia down, nitrates down........nitrates do whatever coz I dont have a test for them :P Plants either flower or they dont

Still no deaths :)

Yup ok ppl.
Problems were I wasn't measuring the meniscus at the right place, hence the vial size argument. Agreed, if I measure it correctly, they are all a lot closer to 5ml.
I don't have every test kit under the sun, it's just each of my 4 test kits for pH, NH, NO2 and NO3 are from different suppliers.
And each supplier specifies 5ml, but I was getting a discrepancy, because I wasn't reading the meniscus properly so the diameter of the vial made the error larger.
In the large vials, they say look down through the thickest part to identify the colour. This would be easier in a different sized tube in my opinion, hence my question.
Next I am not mixing colour charts and chemicals, only containers. the colour charts that come with the chemicals will be used with the chemicals, as I only have one set of each anyhow.
Does that clear up som misunderstandings?

OB, I only wanted to know if I could chop and change vials. cos I prefer vials from different vendors. I only have 1 test kit of any type, they're just all from different vendors.
As it turns out, they all use 5ml. this I thought was wrong, cos I didn't know how to read a measuring cylinder, something else I have forgotten since school. I really am getting dumber.
I dont know why ppl think I'm trying to compare vendors.

Thought u were going to bed old man :sleepy1: :) Either way if you measure your vials to the amount you need e.g. 5mls and mark them yourself you will know the exact levels :thumbleft:

sweeeeet :) I think tony mention something once about different vials having different refraction and this influenced the colours ...

Yup I get that now... we were talking about increasing accuracy of nitrate levels for when you have WAY too many and it goes red almost instantaneously.

oh, yeah I forgot, gotta be at work in 6 hours, thanks for the reminder Gnash... (old man... humph!)
