I would think, no problems at all with sandy soils (even easy to dig the hole), but heavy clay soils with poor drainage may cause problems with tanks floating or the sides bulging in.

Hi,

Most tank manufacturers won't warrant their tanks below ground unless either washed sand or crusher dust is used for backfilling.

Really, hadn't heard that before Jonty, thanks for that.... is that due to the fact that those materials provide better drainage whereas clay/soil will hold a greater amount of water??

The reason for sand or crusher dust is that water can move easily and prevent hydraulic pressure.
