Janet, my method would be; subtract one from five, remainder four. Now, knowing that four x five is remaining, you know that you have four more spaces of one by five. Thus to get a desired GB with a width of one meter, you would need a grow bed one meter wide by twenty five meters long to get the same square area as five by five. (My example would be one of 1.5 meters by 1.5 meters. If you subtract one from one.five, you have a remainder of .5. Knowing that your original square area was 1.5 you multiply that by .5 and get a result of .75, which you add back to 1.5, giving you a length of 2.25 by 1.)

Sorry, I am a child of the 60's/70's and was taught "New" Math. (A method by which you confuse others, as well as yourself, through overly complicated methods of calculation.)

Back to the question of cycling.

So there are both adherents to the philosophy of constant turn over, and timed cycling. Do any of you have any data as to whether timed cycling results in greater anearobic bacterial cleaning of the water than constant flow? If so, is it better to hold the length between cycling to a longer or shorter duration? Then on the other hand, is a constant flow better at "trickle" than at a hard flood?

DUMB JOKE ALERT!!!

A backcountry farmer sent his son to a prestigous college for an education. After the son's graduation the father asked the young man to show off some of the knowledge he had gained. The son replied, "Pi R squared!" The father snorted and said, "what a total waste of time and money! Any darned fool knows, pie are round, cornbread are square!" :P

Kevin, believe it or not, we just don't have all the answers. Feel free to 'Take One for the Team', and test the differences in the scenarios you outline. ;)
