is it possible to hang the bait above the tank so when they leave, they leave with a purpose?

I am going to try some milk, bread and blood, all hanging in one of those plastic net bags that your oranges come in, suspended over one of the wheelie bin ponds I use.

I will water it every evening to keep it moist .. and see what happens?

Thanks guys and gals! Good idea!

Hi Jaymie,

Yes, I've always liked that idea.....and your adaption of it. I had hoped to grow the little buggers to a bigger size but their tendency to leave is interfering with the plan.

I'm going to try wrapping the baits in newspaper......I've read of several people doing that.

The part that irritates me is that every second day (it seems), we'll put something in the compost bin and it will turn into a writhing mass of fat larvae.....but the moment I try to control the process, it goes awry.

I was interested to note that, just as I was about to chuck out my bread and milk bait (along with all the mill run that I had provided for self-cleaning), along came these large flies. They were swarming all over the bait, so I've left it in the hope that they turn out to be more sedentary creatures.

As a consequence of watchin CSI - Criminal Investigation on TV, I've learned that different fly species strike at different intervals in the decay process. The larger flies that came around last night, seemed to be attracted to the strong yeasty odour that had developed around the bait.

I don't know what sort of fly they are......something between a common housefly and a blowfly (bluebottle).....and they have irridescent green bodies.
