the canvas/denim choice - these would deteriorate in water - plus I am pretty sure that Yabbys would feed off out the materials especially denim, as they are natural (mostly) fabrics (yabbys, shrimp and prawns are like the cocaroaches of the water world, eating almost anything that will rot)
However I am not too sure what the material dyes will do to the quality of your system...

Woods will release tannin ( and other substances) into your water - some wood sap can be harmful to humans and fish (ever heard of the fish tree - the leaves of which are crushed and used to paralise fish in water ways?) - look closely at what wood you will use - also wood will most likely affect the ph of your water, so keep an eye on that :)

BRICKS - hmmm, both cement or clay should be fine as long as there is no paint on them I guess...

Hmm.

I was thinking of using denim/fabric as sorta grow bags dangling in the water ...

RS, if you were going to try the fabric, maybe go for something undyed like calico, double or triple layers depending on the quality of the fabric

Been reading leviticus...

Of course most this stuff is over my head, but there are a lot of bells ringing as I ponder this book.
