Simple single pump flood and drain systems can still be set up without having to use an autosyphon (the prospect of which could be a bit scarey at first). Although I intend to have autosyphons in the long run, at present my 580 litre bed is run flood and drain with a 2000 litre per hour pond pump (though less capacity at the 80cm head I am running it at) by using a cheap timer to control the cycles.
