If you are 100% sure that your water wont overflow into drains and land up in the local stream then it should be okay... I used water from our washing machiene on the back lawn and had a great looking lawn all winter.

I agree that the phosphates are going to be less of an issue if you are just going to use the greywater directly on the garden.

When I referred to putting the water through a sedimentation trap, I was attaching to an earlier post by Beeso which spoke about using greywater in an aquaponics system.

I guess, as a principle, I'd rather not use greywater in a fish tank. I still intend to "polish" our greywater (using a mini-wetlands) before I use it on our conventional gardens......not so much because of the phosphates but because of all of the other 'nasties' that are likely to be found in detergents.

Once the water is purified, I'll add some replacement water from the fish tank and some worm tea and apply that to the gardens.
