Put yucky food garbage in bucket or trash can. Lean bucket or trash can over edge of fish pond. Tape or tie plastic garbage bag as a flap over the opening of the bucket or trash can to keep rain out fut allow BSF in to lay eggs. Larva climb out of wet yucky food garbage when ready to pupate and fall into fish tank to feed fish.

That is my version Pics are on another thread about BSF

Yes... Circle 3 group has told us that they are in the process of setting up a webstore to distribute the biopod. I don't know what url they will be using but I will post it the minute i know. Feel free to give them a call, ask for David Watson. They have already tested the units for australian entomology and have ordered a full container. Please feel free to give us any feedback about this vendor as it is important that Australian enthusiast's needs are well met.

As you will notice, thebiopod.com in the USA is setting up its webstore infrastructure as well. I hope to be up and running by March 1st. That will allow us to streamline the sales of non-commercial individual units.

RupertofOZ

That is my father's presentation that he put together over the years.
In the mean time it has been updated.

You can find the most recent presentation at:

http://www.thebiopod.com/pages/pages/keynotes.html

We are using google docs to publish them. I hope this format pleases everybody.

It's actually because of DanDman's copy and paste that I googled this forum and started reading all about aquaponics and the potential role BSF could play in this development

TCLynx,

I agree your setup should work without a problem. The amazing thing about the black soldier fly is that nature is the one that has endowed them with all the natural characteristics to recycle. All we need to do is assist nature in doing so.

I like to make a comparison between a biopod and a bee-hive. Just as the beehive is needed to raise bees, so do we need a new vessel to raise soldier fly. You don't need a biopod per se to get Black soldier fly, nor do you need a man-made beehive to attract bee's. Nature gets you all the soldier fly you want for free.

The trick is to think like nature does and to provide us humans with a means to effectively domesticate nature's most powerful recycler. I only know of 2 insects that have ever been domesticated for products they produce: the Silk Worm and the honey bee. I would hope that together with aquaponics we can come up with a way to domesticate a third insect for it's high protein, fat and chitin content.

Vermiculture is great, but it fails to produce a significant and valuable byproduct like black soldier fly can. That's why we coin it Prota™Culture. The Greek root of "prota" means "basic" or "essential" and also refers to the modern word "protein" that are essential for all life.

Compost and vermicomposting are good waste management systems. Prota™Composting using black soldier fly is different because you can capture the nutrients in your waste immediately and turn around and feed them to chickens and fish the moment they "fall out of your bucket".

I think what you are doing is GREAT !!! The reason we made the biopod was to create a cleaner beehive. Something with less yuk-factor, a liquid drainage mechanism and overall easier to use. In other words, we are not helping the black soldier fly recycle, but we are trying to help the humans find a suitable device so we can use the black soldier fly.

ALSO, I'm very interested in the quality of your fish, now that you have added the black soldier fly. What are the benefits of "live" feed? Is there a taste difference?

Sincerely,

Robert

The google doc runs out of space some times. I dont really care for it, but thats me.

I see that you have designed a toilet lid. So these cna process human poo too? Interesting! How would this compare to a composting toilet?

Interestingly, out of absolutley no planning at all, my worm farm has turned into a worm & BSF larvae farm. It is absolutley teeming with them. I'll post a photo tonight.

Here is the photo of the BSF larvae and worms living in harmony. Smells just like it should too.

Have a qwik thought for you, get some 3/4 black retic pipe and cut in half length ways, glue it to sides of container in an upwards arc, at peak of arc add a tee piece with the single poking through to outside, add an elbow to single facing down and a container underneath the elbow.
Who knows it may make a good BSF unit :)
