I have had good luck using a 5 gallon bucket with a 5 gallon mesh filter that is used to strain debris from paint. My overflow comes from my FT SLO and then overflows into the sump. From there, it splits from my pump to return some back to the fish tank or carry on to a swirl filter > GB > return to sump > repeat...... I clean it in under 3 mins (bit longer now with temps in the teens) and dont shut/bypass anything.

The system above is around 180 gallons with 20ish SF of media beds. Rethinking if I can alter my current 5 gallon mesh bucket for my expansion to include DWC (IBCFT>swirl>static>sump>GB>IBCFT.

Ill have to reread the posts above a second (third) time to get all of the different designs to soak in......
