Steve, the thou (0.001") was the motor mechanics guild badge, a reminder to the rest of the world that we could see things no-one else could see, and any experienced mechanic could set Holden points to 16 thou by eye or a spark plug gap to 25 thou without the aid of a guage. Then came Metric feeler guages and I had to revert to the calculator and a pencil to do the conversion back to good ol' thous. But I can still do points on a old Holden by eye !

I still work in inches as much as I can... I use millimeters when I need to be accurate. It all comes from my tabletop war gaming days, all of that was in inches so I got used to it. Inches are good because it is less numbers to remember...

When im at work i think in metres or mm's (im in construction) but when im shaping surfboards (another hobby of mine) i think in feet & inches. I can think & "see" both measures when working on each respectively ...but to this day I still cant convert between the two.... confusing at best...

I can do a rough calculation in my head for dimensions... 1 Inch is roughly 2.5 cm, 1 foot is 30 cm etc.... Weight and Volumes I usually have to look it up.

I do a lot of smaller scale stuff. I will use inches if it makes it easier to mark and cut materials... 3 inches instead of 7.5 cm for example...

I think it is good to know both.

80% of the folks on this board are using the metric system, Slicer. They'll have to get out their calculators to know how deep their beds are. ;) What I can't figure out is why they always talk in terms of mm, not cm, though.

thought i would beat the mods to my post lol, was along the lines of us being more accurate with mm as opposed to george W gettin a geography lesson by means of invading a country he never knew existed lol
