I have a choice of a half watertank[ 1000mmx2000mm] or a fibreglass one [600x 2000] but both require a plastic liner due to holes in them. Would I have any advantage in the deeper tank ie surface to depth ratio etc?

Hi pisces - 600mm might be a bit shallow once you consider how much water will come out of it on the flood cycle - if you are in fact intending to use it F&D.

Get both! The short one could make a good grow bed.

If this helps at all... I think that the deeper one is much better - as the fish can go down lower and hide - they will feel much more happy

It is good if you are going to keep the tank above ground:D

But if you are thinking of digging a hole - then it means more digging....

And the fish may be harder to catch.....

there does seem to be a link between the DEPTH of water and the growth of fish.. If you dont believe me you should go look at CHOCOLATE-CRAZY's tank - in one year we have grown a monster of a comet tail goldfish - its friend (purchased at the same time) is large, but no-where as large as the one in the 1m cube tank !

AM did you find that my barra have been growing slower then yours did? As yours are in the same type of tank yet underground...

Good thinking chockie, the other think about a deep tank is that it has a higher volume to surface area meaning less evaporation
