in permaculture deep rooted plants such as comfrey and artichoke are good to plant on the drip lines of fruit trees as the reach down and pull up the trace elements which are so defecient in australian soils...anyone been able to feed fish comfrey

Beeso - my fish wouldn't take it. Early on I thought the silvers might have taken a bit - but I never was able to replicate. I have no doubt though that they would eat it if incorporated into a pellet (which is my intention).

Stevo - your lucky day, I have one big comfrey plant that was seperate to all the others and is luch. It is about a metre from the AP system coincidentally. Used to have about 30 plants in another patch - but they have all died and the roots have composted.

I will send you a couple of roots. You can easilly divide from them once you have plants.

Had this link bookmarked regarding treatment of fish diseases....

http://www.webbsonline.com/catalog/meds/

Halfway down you'll find a product called "Jungle Labs Pond Salt" that says in part ...

Quote:
Jungle introduces pond salt with a "kick." Salt has always been proven to help fight fish disease and reduce stress. Now you can get a salt that does even more! Jungle Fortified Pond Salts also has minerals, electrolytes and allantoin.

Allantoin is one of the natural compounds found in the herb, comfrey root. It benefits both fish and aquatic plants:

promotes wound healing
speeds cell and tissue growth
encourages the healthy, natural processes of fish and plants
protects irritated skin and tissue

Seems like comfrey could be beneficial for a few things....

And yes the "New Alchemists" used it as a source of fish feed... dried and used as pellets VB...:D

http://www.vsb.cape.com/~nature/greence ... 6ponds.pdf

and comfrey leaves are often utilised in composting in general and compost teas due to there high Potassium content :D

There is all that talk about comfrey giving liver damage - which is probably shit anyway. Regardless, not a problem in this application I believe.

This comfrey plant is looking quite healthy. I must rebuild my stocks from this plant (its all I have left).

File comment: Is just near my AP. Threw a root in there ages ago. Didn't give it any attention but glad it is there, cause my whole bed of comfrey is now dead.
