Been there done that (and got the T shirt) Glass jars are a great way for the beginners to get their head around what goes on inside a BS. So much for the BS of having a Siphon break tube. Have found they are just not necessary. I do like the video of the tipping beaker to vary flow rates.

In terms of naming, may I put forth:
Centrally Organised Independant of Timing Universal Siphon.
Or
COITUS.

On reflection, this acromyn might not catch on.

Genius idea though

Hey Nom!

I figured you were from here.

Does this mean you've read the thread on my marron farm :)

Hi All,

seeing we are talking about adjustable siphons an idea I was thinking of was an inverted U tube siphon, say 40 mm pipe, (better on the outside of the GB). Having a ball valve on the outlet and possibly even on the inlet.

For those that cant get their siphons to operate they can easily tune it to their particular conditions by partially closing the valve/s as required. If the siphon is not stopping close the outlet valve a bit etc.

Certainly not self adjusting for different flow rates like yours but maybe handy for those that just cant seem to get their siphons to work, or reliably.

Cheers.

If I can manage it, I'll make one today that's a little better built than my first.
The one I posted a picture of fit into a bell made from a the base of a 1.25 litre soft drink bottle.and finished at a 19mm siphon that turned out to be a bit large for the 4 standpipes.

Still cant drive so havnt been able to get to the hardware. If all goes well Ill get some stuff from the hardware this weekend.

Hey Bull, just had a look at your marron farm idea, did you ever trial anything like this?

I have a few opinions about how this would work.

I haven't yet, but I'd love to hear the input. I'm always on the lookout for ideas, corrections or derisive laughter as is suitable.

I think with the uber syphon, you would have to make sure the 2nd, 3rd and 4th etc: syphon outlets are under water, otherwise air will be sucked up them and stop the big siphon from kicking in..
Top stuff.
Wavey.

I've just been exploring this and it doesn't seem to be the solution. But I think you are correct. I think it's the problem :)

The secondary standpipes are effectively under water at least intermittently, where the small standpipes meet to become one.

I'm still stumped. This simple version seems to work, but I still need to know how I saw the level rise in the uber siphon.

The only other thing I can think of is some kind of venturi action at the point where the small standpipes joined to become a big one. If it was something like that, perhaps some chaotic behaviour sealed the tubes and kicked off the siphons randomly.

This needs more brains

or something.

If that is what happened I might never be able to make it reliable.

Thats a pretty long and complicated way of trying to fix siphon issues. Not very easy to adapt to a growbed in real life, I much prefer the cluster siphon idea...

yeah I agree.

But this was was never about anything to actually solve any excising problem or anything. It was more a pure science thing to try to suss how the universe works :)

It's me after all...

What did you expect :)
