it takes really high nitrates to be toxic to fish. You can dilute the test with half storebought water that has zero nitrates to try to get an accurate reading. Also remember the api test kit comes with saltwater nitrates card not usually a freshwater. you may want to check online for the freshwater one.

I'd try hard to get plants in there and use up the nitrates that way.

Post some pictures for us?

But plant some thing that'll suck up the nitrates, or toss some of the solids.

Letting the filters go anaerobic will denitrificate the nitrates also. But get stuff growing.
