On the subject of wheelie bins, I can tell you that the Canadian ones are pretty tough and in no danger of bursting but I guess that does not help you.

It is impossible for me to move the bin fully loaded but I was able to move it half loaded.

I figure that it would be possible to move it with wooden handles that would be used as lever. I will try it eventually but I have other priorities for now.

The size and shape of the bin makes it extremely useful.

I may endup standardizing on them.

Iam assuming we are talking about those 240L ones? Ive seen some plastic industrial kinda ones upto 600L ;) but they look like they would burst.... Those small 100-something litre ones would be solid and indestructible.

Well I asked the guy who makes them

Subject: holding water

G'day

Just a quick question about the 120 and 240 ltr bin. How would these go with holding water over a prolonged period? I'm interested in using them for aquaculture. I've seen some photo's of wheelie bins side's splitting which is of concern for me.

Thanks in advance

The Reply

Yes I think it would be a concern. The bins are guaranteed to be lifted holding about half their volume in weight - stationery it would be more but they are not safety tested full of water.

One of my customers is a large bakery who fill them with grains and water to soak - these bins are lifted so there is extra stress on them - they last about 8 months to a year.

We do sell them for using with grey water but they should not be left full of water.

The best I can suggest is to try it out - filling only two thirds would help as would keeping the bin out of direct sun (I imagine this would be the case for aquaculture) as UV is harsh on plastic.

Hope this helps,
