Hmmm. But the larger quantity of water in a buried sump means that it would be far less susceptible to temperature variations. There are pros and cons to both methods. It is purely dependent on the amount of time, money and effort you are willing to provide.

We're just here to throw as many ideas as we can at you in the hopes that you can see all possible solutions then choose the one which is best for your setup.

Yes, I was a bit disappointed when I did the maths on the volume of a roll of pipe. My system is a bit of a lost cause. Steel tank above ground and all too hard to change now.
Has anyone tried or has photos of a bakki shower or cooling tower and what's the results like?

Why can't you insulate the sides of your tanks? That would be the same as burying it if the insulation is as good the stuff used in roofing.

...bakki shower...

Ah, something I'm kind of qualified to answer on. Bakki Showers are used a lot in high end Koi breeding. These are primarily filtration units. It's the special ceramic media that is placed inside them and the high flow through which gives them their excellent filter capabilities. They do have a cooling effect though. But this is only because of the way the media breaks up the water flow and drops it down the tower. However the cooling effect only works when you do it this way. By using other media (gravel - not enough flow through, wool - clogs up too fast and compacts, plastic flow-core - the only other acceptable media type that can be used in these) you don't get the same flow rate and drop size. The ceramic media used in these beasties is expensive. Definitely good for high end Koi rearing. Not good for AP. We have grow beds after all.

The cooling effect would be much better with a proper cooling system.

I was a week late on scoring some good panels. I'm still looking.

These are the pictures I've been looking for Rupe. Are you still using that design or have you modified it and would you say it was effective?

I haven't read it all yet, but this seems to be a good thread.
