I have a problem with bees finding their way into the green house but not being able to get out again. What do people suggest is the best way to solve this?

IMO, bees in the GH are a good thing. Without them you are not going to get as much in the way of fruits and veggies. Leaving the door open should be enough for them to find their way out.

Actually not as so silly, I do leave the door open but the bees seem to go to the plastic and never to the open door, I have wondered if I could use a light or colour strip up high on the ends of the greenhouse to attract them. I love having bees in there I just hate seeing dozens dying because they don't find the way out.

I see - ya I have a beef with dead bees too. My wife is allergic to them and will kill them just because.... And my eldest daughter has decided they are better dead too. Not to sure how to educate them on the matter.

Perhaps a lot of red white and pink just outside the door. I know they follow me around like there is no tomorrow when wearing a bramuda shirt.

....easy solution .... the bees get annoyed with different smells... you can't go near them if you have smelly stuff on (deodorants, perfumes etc) and they hate oil's and fuel smells so that is usually why you get stung....about getting them out of the green house you could buy some vents or windows to put in near an edge as they always work themselves to an edge..... other than that ...bees live around for 35 days the ones that are foraging are the ones that are going to die soon anyway as that is the last job they do in their life cycle 95% dont make it back to the hive to die
about other family members.... the question is do the wife and kid like honey if they do take it out of the cupboard and not let them have any as if they kill the bee's then there won't be any

ok hope i have helped and not got you in deep with the wifey hehehehe

I reckon I have trouble not attracting enough bees into my greenhouse. They can get out at the top as both ends have a top plastic covered louver window that has a gap.

My thought was to put a bee hive in the side of the greenhouse so I always would have bees and they then should find their way home.(?)

Double Decker you sound like you know a lot about bees, what do you reckon?

I have always though it would be a good idea to have a hive in the gh too and would be interested to hear if anyone has done it.I have a grandaughter who is violently alergic to bees and they seek her out and then she has to go to hospital. She hardly ever visits now so I am cosidering it again.I have also heard that there is a native bee that has no sting and it is semi tropical so it may live in the GH.I have vents in the top of my GH at either end so the bees get out there OK.

When I was a kid I would feed bees to my huntsman spiders in a fish tank. In order to speed up the action at feeding time I discovered I could direct the bees to the spider by shading the light from everywhere other than where the spider was.... so im guessing when bees are trapped they try to get out by heading for the light... smart if you are in a pumpkin flower... not so smart if you came in through the front door and the sun is shining through the side wall ...

try a small opening where the sunshine is coming from ... like most critters they will track around randomly against the join tween the roof and walls that block the direction they want to be going... so three or four holes along each of the "seams" will let them out .... or just get some spiders and/or a kid :)

I just noticed that so far 50 % of my posts (4) have been about insects??? :) (caution - my stats indicate I could just be some kind of loony so don't sue me or anything - this is just a guess ) :dontknow: etc etc add general disclaimers here

I had thought about that also, but as I read more about it, bees generate quite a bit of heat (good in the winter I guess), but they continueously fan the larve to keep them cool. Not sure if the extra heat in hte GH in summer woould kill them or not....anyone?

Hi,

I bought some bumble bees in a Bee Box Home a few weeks ago for my green house. they were a bit pricy, but worth it......
http://www.abetterbee.com/index.html

they have really helped pollinate the tomatos and cucumbers, peppers, etc........

we have been having cucumbers from the new F&D growbed, and there are LOT's of tomatos set now in the GB that will be ripeing up soon......

the bumble bees are very calm and easy going compared to honey bees, and have never bothered me at all....
