this is called biofiltration and would be a good thing, however there are lots of shade loving "house plants" that will thrive in low light, AP dont have to be vedgies you could have ferns or lots of other nice plants.,


If I use temporary plants for nitrate elimination and then pull these plants out after I get the actual plant(s) I want to grow, will the leftover roots from the previous plants cause any problems for the new plant?

Most people remove the plants, roots and all before planting the next crop.
If you have a really small system and leave too much organic mater in the bed to break down, it could overload the system.

It helps to pull plants out of the beds when they are flooded as the water seems to help loosen the roots grip on the media. I sometimes cut the plant off a few inches above the gravel and then wait several days before trying to pull the roots out.

Most of us are only pulling out the main root mass and not worrying about the little tiny bits that break off and are left in the beds as the composting worms take care of those just fine.

Just make shore if planting temporary plants chose carefully heres a mint of some sort after 12 months
