I use filter mesh under the in inlets to the gb's to catch aglae and some solids. After a while I tend to forget about them. Now stuff is growing. I think the plant is just a common weed carried in the wind. But as long a small amount of water hits the mesh the whole bit stays wet enough for the pants to grow. Might be a novel way to start some seeds. The mesh does not break down and could come out with the mature plant.

These ones I have to replace with ones that don't grow wild in the back yard.

I had some blue filter material under a water flow to catch stray bits and it seemed to work quite well to grow some plants. This was actually a bit of filter material over part of the fish tank sitting on some wire shelving. A fine place to plant some seeds and worms seem quite happy living in the filter material as well.
