Barney, Barney, Barney... you clearly haven't read enough posts if you think "too big" is language tolerated on this forum ;-)

As for the tank. Too much water helps stabilise temperature, ammonia spikes, nitrite spikes, salt levels etc.
All in all, the more water you have, the more time you have to react to a problem.

If you don't have enough grow beds to service all that water, that's ok, just 'Don't use' all the water. eg stock the tank as if it has less water.

Also, if you have a look around, there are very few ppl who have not 'grown' their system through a series of upgrades. A large tank will make upgrades much simpler for you.

Hehe...Well, I did mention in my first post that I am renovating in the coming months and therefore don't want to have to be draining and moving a massive system.

OK, so I might PM veggie boy about his tank. Where to get good grow beds then?

They can be bought from Joel, via VB I think, or else I use 'Tilkey' Tubs, available from Landmark down here, dunno about from whence you hail.

Oh, and with regard to draining? I use 6 tanks, and made sure I had one empty at all times, then I could drain whenever I felt like it without damaging the system. (until I drained and moved a tank that was supporting another (full) one, then I almost got crushed by a tonne of water :-( )

Here's an alternative for you Barney... don't know the pricing... and it's a new product on the market...

Is a member up 1790 way that uses them... http://www.bundytanks.com.au/

Go to "Tanks Sizes & Styles"..... Select.... or scroll down to "Aquaponics"....

An "allinone".... tank and growbed.... might be limited in terms of expansion... but not a bad way to start... and great if you limited by space....

To clarify - I'm not a BYAP supplier, though if you buy BYAP gear I'm more than willing to take a commission

The tank I have is a second had fibreglass one (with built in stand) - originally from Aquasonic.
