I'd say there is every likelyhood that our mature grow-beds can and do house both soil and water type nitrifying bacteria.

There are a couple of products on the market which are for the biological filters, they include the Nitosospira (which is the soil type) and the Nitospira (which is both soil and marine type), now niether of these are freshwater bacteria, they are soil and ocean bacteria and I have been told that they do their job a little more efficiently then the original two....

the Nitrosomonas comes from all habitats Soil, Sewage, Freshwater and Marine..
the Nitrobacter comes from all the same except sewage...
