Has anyone here used Biohome for a prefilter for your tank water? We are going to raise some extra fish in the garage with just a few little grow beds that will do ok indoors. They won't be enough to filter the water adequately. The big growbeds are going in the greenhouse with Koi--I think, since they can handle the large temp range. I guess I need a more thorough filtering system to keep the fish happy. It says I would need one liter for a 500 gallon (2250 liter) tank. It's about $50--so not too expensive. I would have a solids filter prior to this.

It is supposed to help colonize a ton of the good bacteria, including the nitrates.

The product is from Australia, I think. Anyone use it?

How much does it cost? (Nevermind $50, duh  ) It looks like a great medium but maybe it would clog easily unless the solids are completely filtered before they see the water. If the nooks and crannies are that small I would think it would get plugged up.

You can use nylon body washers? That is interesting. I was going to build a filter in my garage that looks like picture below. I have a heavily insulated, heated garage --but it has little light. I thought I could do a filter like this, maybe with the biohome or nylon body washers. The biohome says that it helps remove nitrates too, which would normally have to be flushed with a plantless system like this. I can maybe have one bed with a grow light over it, but it wouldn't be able to take care of it all. I guess if it really works and costs $50 then it is worth it--or does the biohome have to be replaced often?

Would this stuff really be better than an insulation batt ,, fibreglass is you like , but available in nylon and or wool at around one tenth of the price ( or less).

Why not just use some small gravel beds with siphons and a small continuous pump?

I am using four 25 gallon Sterilite tubs from WalMart, each with a loop siphon, and one 340 GPH fountain pump from Lowe's, that is handling the filtering for about 30 or 40 good sized tilapia. I grew plants in them under a grow light for the first half of last year:

If that is all you need for good filtration then I may as well do that. :D I suppose I could put my herb garden in the garage under lights and sterilite tubs are really cheap. Thanks!
